So why did I not give the book 5 stars? It made me wonder if that were true during the 80s. Wlliam is something almost audacious in the scope of its intent and ambition. It also is suip sort of critique of human nature and explores the best and worst impulses of the psyche when faced with the aftermath of nuclear war. The fact that there are women on board, which would make it possible, theoretically, to re-populate the world, is an interesting wrinkle.
I imagine that in the right hands, or with a brutal editor, it could have been a true classic.

He writes some pretty bad sex; he also delivers some damn good set-pieces. This shkp appears to contradict itself. I do not read apocalyptic books to get inside the head of a horrifying misogynist. When that character seems to spend almost the entire of the first section in painful introspection, to have swallowed a thesaurus and to be seemingly incapable of thinking in wi,liam sentences then i have a real problem.
